How to Build Your Blog (When You’re Resisting It!)

So you’re on board with the idea of having a blog to support yourself as a health practitioner. But when it comes to blogging… you’re just not feeling it. Something is making it way harder than you feel it should be.

Don’t feel like you have to slog and grind to make blogging work for you! There are ways around this resistance, depending on what the drivers are. In my experience, there are 4 main options for building your blog content up with greater ease.

How to Build Your Blog (When You’re Resisting It!)

Otter it

Not a writer? Find yourself getting writers block every time you open up a blank document? Otter is going to be your new BFF.

Whether it’s Otter or your own preferred voice-to-text app, this can make it way easier to smash out blogs for your website. Simply talk to your phone or computer whenever you get an idea for a blog, cover the main points, and voila – you’ve got a draft ready to work with!

Just remember to edit it before you upload. Voice-to-text tech is never 100% accurate, and you don’t need a blog full of ums and ahs! But it’s far easier to edit something that’s already in text form than it is to come up with something from scratch.

My favourite part about this option? It travels with you! I remember that almost my entire New Graduate Guide came into being thanks to an Otter transcript from a 45 minute walk with my furbaby. But if I had waited until I got home, the inspiration would have vanished and many of the points I came up with would have been lost forever.

Simplify it

In many cases, I find that pracs overcomplicate blog posts. I know it’s hard – you’ve come from years of study that have you stuck in academic writing mode! But this is not a literature review or an assignment. A good blog should be easy to read, understand and include action steps of some kind for the reader.

So that’s where simplifying the topics, structure and content itself can make it much easier to create more blogs (and quicker!)

I recommend:

  • Having a brainstorm of topics ready to write up when you feel inspiration hit

  • Writing out dotpoints for each topic and sticking to them as subheadings

  • Moving any tangents or less relevant info into another doc for future blogs

  • Reading your content out loud to see if it is actually reader-friendly (rather than praccie-speak!)

  • Sticking to simple best practices for SEO and readability (if you haven’t already, you can grab a copy of my Blog Post Checklist by jumping onto this mailing list!)

Outsource it

If you loathe writing? Please don’t make yourself write! There are people out there (myself included) who adore the written word, and who understand the world of blogging and written content.

This might not be immediately accessible for you when you’re first starting out. But once you have a bit of traction as a practitioner, it may be a worthwhile investment to outsource your written content. A well-trained writer or VA will be able to create high-quality blogs that are SEO-friendly and aimed right at your ideal clients. So you can spend more time doing what you do best – serving your clients!
