What To Do If Your Biz Flopped In 2020
Do you feel like you didn’t hit your business goals in 2020? If so, you’re not alone.
Many practitioners struggled to reach the level they had aspired to over the last year. For some, the world situation sabotaged the attempt to uplevel or leverage their business. For others, they didn’t even get off the ground as a new practitioner!
No matter what the reason - if you feel like your business flopped in 2020, this is for you.
What to do if you didn’t hit your business goals for 2020
Cut yourself some slack
First up, you need to cut yourself a little bit of slack. Many people have lost businesses or jobs over the past year. So although it absolutely sucks that your business flopped - you still have it.
This is what I kept telling myself for the entirety of the Melbourne lockdown. I was under a heap of stress and strain. At one point, I had a meltdown, but throughout I still tried to keep perspective and remember that I was doing my best in shocking circumstances.
And after all - if I managed to match my income from the previous year in the shitstorm that was 2020, what could be possible for the new year?
Look for what good came from the year
Even if everything has felt terrible, there will have been some good that has come from this year. Do a brainstorm and find some of the upsides of 2020 for yourself and your business.
For example:
Did you finally master the art of a Zoom call?
Have you moved your business online, and felt like it was a better fit?
Did you try out a new offer and find it worked for you - or that it wasn’t right for you?
Have you found a passion for a new hobby?
Did get you get into a regular workout routine that makes you feel badass?
My own upsides include:
I no longer have to explain Zoom to every second client (because I’ve been using Zoom for nearly 4 years!)
My business stayed afloat for the entire year
I learned to appreciate time outside and many things that we take for granted during the Melbourne lockdown
This might take some time, especially if you have copped some massive downsides. But your entire year was not a waste - you have grown and learned as you’ve gone. Which takes us to…
List out your lessons of 2020
The ‘good’ thing about a crummy year is that you learn SO frikkin much - about yourself, about your business, and about what you do and don’t want in your life.
So have a think about what your biggest lessons have been this year. Think about who has been there for you and kept you sane. What are you clearer about, and what are you excited to move towards?
Let go of what is no longer serving
If you’re anything like me, you set yourself a crazy amount of goals and to-dos for any given week, month or year. And then when you don’t get it all done, you get down on yourself.
But one big blessing of what has happened in 2020 is that we’ve been given some perspective. So now is time to let go of what no longer serves us.
Ask yourself whether you have any:
Goals that you think you ‘should’ do
To-dos that you hate - for example, if you hate Instagram, don’t use it!
Services or products that you did because someone else has it, but you don’t care much for
Offers that no longer light you up
Limiting beliefs that are stopping you from building your dream biz
Thanks to 2020, I’ve let go of the expectation that all of my income needs to be 1:1 work. Releasing that allowed me to build my first online course and come up with other services to come in the new year.
