5 Steps To Get Your Marketing Back On Track

Look for the easiest step first

You know that fantastic elaborate 5-part marketing plan you put together all the way back in January?

Put it to the side. Now is not the time for complex.

Instead, look for the teensiest little step you can take today, and every day, to get yourself back on track.

Can you:

  • Come up with a list of blog ideas that are relevant to your followers?

  • Look through your previous blogs and see what you could elaborate more on?

  • Schedule just one Facebook post for the week instead of thinking you need at least 5?

  • Send one email to your mailing list for the month instead of worrying about weekly?

  • Set aside 15 minutes a day to chip away at your marketing?

Little steps add up to giant leaps. When you feel overwhelmed, break the task down as far as you possibly can.

As the saying goes: how do you eat an elephant? One piece at a time.

Create content that you enjoy

If you kick off your marketing efforts with the platform or content type you're not a big fan of, you'll probably fall off track within 2 weeks.

We're more likely to be consistent if we like what we're doing - it's human nature! That's why you want to create the type of content you enjoy, and focus on topics that you enjoy.

Don't really 'enjoy' content creation yet? Go for whichever is easiest for you. If you like talking, go for videos or podcasts. If writing is more your thing, go for blog posts and newsletters.

Once you've got into a good pattern of your chosen form of content, then you can consider whether you want to add another in.

Repurpose the shiz out of what you already have

If you're new around here, you might not know that I am all about lazy marketing. There is no point in creating content that is only ever going to see the light of day once!

When you need to get your marketing back on track, you can use older content and reuse it to bridge the gaps.

Share a blog post you wrote this time last year, or repost your favourite quotes. If you've done a guest blog or podcast before, reshare it now - that way, your biz AND someone else's gets a little boost.

Batch when you feel good

If you're anything like me, you have good days and bad days. On bad days, marketing is like pushing a boulder up Mount Everest. But on good days, content flows easily and inspiration is right there.

You can't completely control whether you have a good day or a bad day, because life happens. But you CAN make the most of good days when they come around, and you can set yourself up to maximise your chance of a good day.

When I have a batch day scheduled into my calendar, here are some things I do to get myself set up for a good day:

  • Clear a physical and mental space. Physical space means that my office is decluttered and any visual distractions are put away. Mentally, I will tick off any nagging to-dos before I settle in or at least schedule them in so I know they will get done.

  • Get a snack and a cup of tea or coffee, plus a glass of water. Hydration is a must, caffeine is optional but helpful for my brain to get into flow! And a tasty snack keeps me motivated as I work

  • Pre-prepping the content. For chunkier content such as lives, podcasts and blogs, I dotpoint out what I'm going to cover before I sit down and actually do it. This way, I'm not sitting there staring at a blank page or forgetting my points when I'm on a live call.

  • Prioritise the to-do list. Every single time I sit down to batch content, I always overestimate what I can actually get done in a day! That's why I make sure I prioritise the content on my list.

  • Exercise and/or meditate for at least 5 minutes. This preps my brain and my body to get into a good flow state to smash out some content. Ideally I'll tick off both, but on my low-energy days, I'll opt for a quick meditation session.

  • Remember how awesome it is to serve. If I go into a work session with the mindset of 'I HAVE to do this work today', chances are I'll drag my feet the whole way. But if I come into it with the approach of 'I get to help people with what I love, how frikkin awesome is that!', it's a whole 'nother ball game.

Focus on done rather than perfect

I used to be a perfectionist when it came to my marketing. I'd re-read every single post before I put it up, and I'd edit my blogs over and over.

But guess what? That extra effort didn't get me more clients.

All it did was force me to produce less content, which meant I was helping fewer people and sharing less valuable information.

Being a perfectionist was actually stopping me from serving as many people as possible!

If you have content to create and you know you tend towards perfectionism, set yourself some boundaries. Let yourself only edit once, or set a time limit before pressing the publish button. Your followers won't even know, and you'll be better off in the long run!

Sometimes, all you need to get your marketing back on track is a good plan. If that's the case for you, I'm here to help.
