By now, you know I love me some good sleep. And I love a cup of tea even better! So when I got the chance to do a sleepy tea review, I was in Sam-heaven. So without further ado, here is my experience with trialling My Sleeping Tea from OrganiTea.
Before The Sleepy Tea Trial: Let Me Set The Scene
I’ve generally never had major issues with sleeping. In fact, as winter sets in, I tend to sleep more than usual just to escape the cold! But in the weeks prior to this test, my sleep was all over the place. The combination of full-time self-employment, studying a Master’s and looking for a rental property to suit was piling on the stress.
Shortly after the sleepy tea trial began, I also received some test results back. Not only were my stress hormones all out of balance, but I was also not producing sufficient melatonin, the sleep neurotransmitter.
So it’s no surprise that my sleep was less than optimal. I was waking up fairly frequently, sometimes from pain and sometimes for no reason. Every second or third night it would take me an hour or two to unwind enough to sleep. Some nights I had incredibly light sleep, and woke up more tired than when I had gone to bed. All of this made me just a little too reliant on the precious coffee to give me my morning energy boost.
Firstly, let’s chat about the tea itself. It’s organic, which makes a nutritionist happy any day. There are also plenty of nerve-soothing ingredients – think vervain, lemon balm, skullcap, passionflower and lavender. Each container gives you 30 serves, or a month’s supply. Which I must say is not too shabby for the price – less than 50c per day for a good sleep is worth it for just about anyone.
So far, so good.
I know a lot of people are wary of sleepy tea blends, because they can taste pretty foul – particularly for those who aren’t used to herbal tea. But I am pleased to report that this sleepy tea is mild and pleasant. If you prefer a little more sweetness, simply add in a teaspoon of raw honey.
This is where it gets impressive. See, I’ve tried plenty of sleepy tea blends before. Some have helped a bit, and others didn’t make a huge difference. I’ve never expected miracles from them.
But I kid you not. After my very first cup of this tea, I slept straight through without waking once for the first time in months. Which is amazing for anyone, but for someone with chronic pain who often wakes up feeling like crap, it’s a godsend.
Of course, this could have been a coincidence. So I drank the tea on and off for a few weeks and monitored how it went. Sure enough, the nights I drank the tea, I slept like a baby. I woke in a puddle of my own drool (so attractive). In fact, some mornings I woke up and found out that I hadn’t moved all night – not great for my joints, but a sure sign of deep sleep!
So would I recommend this sleepy tea? If you’re not allergic or sensitive to any of the ingredients, and aren’t going to consume it with medication/before driving or operating heavy machinery? A resounding HELL YES.
