How To Choose A Niche (When You Have No Effin Idea)
When you come out into the health practitioner world, you’re so excited to help anyone and everyone.
But then you hear this crazy idea that you’re not supposed to help everyone?
And that you in fact need to choose ONE group to serve?
Don’t freak out on me completely.
Although a niche is an amazing tool for your business, it doesn’t have to be an overwhelming one. Let’s take a look at choosing a niche, even if you have no idea of who you might want to work with.
Why do I need a niche in the first place?
Put simply - very few practitioners find success as a 'general practitioner' and helping every single health concern and interest within their modality.
Not picking one makes your marketing harder to tailor.
It makes it harder to build the know-like-trust factor because your content will be general and all over the place.
It makes it harder to make your services feel like the solution to someone's problem. If someone says ‘I have a problem with X’, your followers won’t necessarily think of you as the go-to for that issue.
So if you want:
Simple, easy, effective marketing
A reputation as a go-to expert in your modality
The opportunity to really dig deep into an aspect of health and feel like an expert
- then you want a niche.
How to narrow down your options if you’re not sure what your niche should be
Sometimes, you’re lucky and come out with at least a decent idea of what you want to do. But if you are sitting there with no idea of who you want to work with, here are some thoughts to get you pondering.
What is your own health journey?
About 90% of the practitioners I work with or speak to end up with a niche of essentially themselves!
This may be you where you’re at right now, e.g. a woman going through menopause or a working mum. Or it may be you earlier on your health journey, e.g. a first-time mum or a child with allergies.
The majority of practitioners are drawn to study a modality through their own experience and success.
So that makes it a perfect place for you to start - particularly since you understand people who are going through that specific struggle.
How have you used your modality to achieve your own goals?
Some practitioners are blessed with good health and vitality. But these people typically have big goals that they chase - and your modality is likely a tool you’ve used.
Have you used:
Nutrition to fuel your sports performance?
Herbs to boost your brainpower?
Myotherapy to reduce the risk of injury?
Counselling to keep you focused on a goal or increase your chance of climbing the career ladder?
If so, there’s a good chance you would enjoy working with people who have similar goals.
Is there a particular body system or concept that fascinates you?
Remember back to the good old Bio 1 days. Was there a body system, process, metabolic reaction, condition that interested you?
I remember that I found the nervous system super-complex, but at the same time I completely geeked out over it!
If you can think of a body system or concept that piques your interest - start there.
Remember - a niche is not a life sentence
If you’re a loyal reader here, you will have heard this before. But I find myself saying it every single week, so repeat after me:
A niche is not a life sentence!
You can change your niche in 3 months, 12 months or 5 years. That’s the joy of being your own boss!
I didn’t graduate and walk straight into marketing for health practitioners. It’s taken about 3 shifts in my focus and niche to get to here - and I bet it’ll be another year or two before I either narrow or grow that niche.
Think of your niche as the gatekeeper of your practice
If someone falls into the niche, they can walk straight through. But if someone doesn’t, you meet them at the gate. It’s up to you to judge whether you’d like to serve that person, or if you’d rather pass them onto someone better suited.
A niche gives you the power over your clinical practice - so embrace it, don’t fear it!
Once you have your niche, what can you do with it?
