Why doing all of the things marketing-wise doesn’t work

A lot of practitioners get stuck in the mindset that more = better when it comes to marketing. But there are a few reasons I don’t recommend trying to do 20 different types of marketing all at once:

  • Different marketing strategies reach different ideal clients - for example, hanging out on Instagram or Tik Tok is probably not a priority if you’re working with 50+ women!

  • It ends up becoming your full-time job - that means less time and headspace to focus on your zone of genius: serving your clients

  • It’s less likely to be quality on-message marketing - you’ll be half-assing multiple channels instead of using your full ass for the #1 spot your ideal client see you!

  • When life gets hectic, you’re more likely to vanish - this gets you on the rollercoaster of all of the marketing booking you up, then a dry spell when your marketing drops off suddenly.

Ways to simplify your marketing

Now that you know why simple is best, let’s look at actionable ways to simplify your marketing.

Focus on 2 key forms of marketing

Start with ONE form of social media and ONE form of other content (blogs, videos, podcasts, etc)

Pick the social media platform that appeals most to your ideal clients. If you’re using something like Facebook Business Suite to schedule your posts, you can cross-post to Facebook/Instagram, but your focus when it comes to optimising the post, reach and engagement is on ONE of the two.

Focus your energy on those two forms of marketing. Anything else is put aside for now.

Once you have nailed and systemised content for these two forms of marketing, you can add more in. But when things get busy, these are the two forms of marketing you fall back on.

The one exception to this rule in my book is a mailing list. I think that pretty much every practitioner should have a mailing list, even if you only send an email out monthly!

Reuse and recycle whenever you can

The best content is the content you can repurpose across your marketing channels. For example:

  • You write a blog

  • On Facebook, you schedule the blog to share, along with some tips or nuggets of wisdom from that same blog. You might also ask a question or two based on that same topic.

  • You send that blog out to your mailing list (or even 2-4 blogs at a time if you’re only sending newsletters out monthly)

Have content handy to reshare when life happens

Sh*t happens.

I think 2020 well and truly made this lesson clear!

But when it hits the fan, you want to avoid disappearing altogether. Otherwise, you’re back to the start once you recover or once things settle back down.

Instead, you want to have something handy that requires less effort and still allows you to show up.

Enter: content you’ve already created.

Sometimes it’s a blog or video from this same time last year.

Other times, it’s content that is always of value to your ideal clients such as *insert your niche’s #1 concern* 101 or 5 tips to relieve *insert your ideal client’s top symptom here*.

It might even be a post or piece of content that performed particularly well when you first shared it, such as your #1 viewed blog for 2020.

This type of content can be a gamechanger. Remember - most people won’t have seen a piece of content you’ve only shared once. Plus it’s a great reminder and refresher for the people who did read it 3/6/12 months ago!

Yes, these tips are simple - just like their goal. Even if you start off with just one, you’ll find marketing easier - and that means you’ll be in a better headspace to attract your ideal clients.
