Writer's Block Got You Stuck? Quick Tips To Bust Through
You sit down, ready to churn out some high-quality content for your readers. And suddenly – writer's block hits. All of your best intentions have come to nothing!
Even as a health writer, I hit writer's block sometimes. So today, I want to share with you some of the tips I teach my 1:1 clients to bust through the block.
Busting Through Writer's Block
Walk it off - Get out into the fresh air and away from technology. Try to be mindful of the things you can see, hear, smell and feel. Often, this detachment from your laptop can get the thoughts ticking. As a bonus, the blood flow will refresh your brain!
Meditate - This is the same concept: get away from the laptop and into your own mind. Sit down and observe your thoughts, even if it's only for 10 minutes. As soon as you're not supposed to think about something, your brain wants to come up with a solution for that something!
Start with dotpoints - If you have a topic, but don't know how to get started, use dotpoints. Map out the main points that need to be covered - such as the what, the why and the how. Once you think about the main points, the words often start flowing.
Set 2 minutes - Timers are your friend when it comes to getting the brain started. Sit down with a 2-minute timer set. Then write anything about your chosen topic - even if it's just babble - for that time. Often, writer's block will dissolve and you can power through until the article is done.
Video it - Sometimes, writer's block is about getting things from the brain onto the paper or page. So pull out your phone, and video yourself talking about the topic. Then you can transcribe across into an article - easy!
Talk it out to someone else - A lot of people are most passionate in person, so just sitting and writing can result in a blank screen. Grab your partner, your friend or your colleague and chat about the topic.
This is how my VIPs work with me - they talk about their passions, and I create their articles for them.
